Naughty Dog has finally revealed what the premise of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s story will be all about. The game picks up three years after the events of Uncharted 3 where protagonist Nathan Drake has settled down with his wife Elena. However, his peaceful retirement from treasure hunting comes to an abrupt end when his thought to be dead brother stumbles back into his life with some nasty people in hot pursuit.

“The next generation of Nathan Drake will explore what it means when Drake is forced back into the world of thieves,” reads the official synopsis for Uncharted 4. “He will embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. It’s his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.”

Drake’s journey with his brother Sam takes them to a pirate colony in Madagascar where it’s a race against time to find a legendary pirate artifact before rivals Rafe and Nadine snag it first. Failure to do so could spell the end of Sam’s life.

“[With] The Last of Us, we went to great lengths to try to create this reality, but we were still limited by the amount of overdraw the PS3 could handle, etc.,” Naughty Dog’s Bruce Straley says. “Now, the PS4 is allowing us to push so much more density, so it’s fun to go back and go like, ‘Oh, look at the things we wish we could have done in Uncharted 1, it’s just like, this is easy, let’s just make this.’ It’s nice to be able to explore something and look back and go, ‘Wow, remember when we couldn’t do any of this?’ It’s kind of neat.”

Straley promises an a brand new roller-coaster adventure with Drake when the game launches later this year. Let us know in the comments below if you’re as excited as we’re for Uncharted 4!

  • I’ve played through the first three Uncharted 4s. I look forward to the next, not just for the gameplay, but that story. You know how people say oh wow this game’s story could make a great movie. I think Uncharted is the only movie quality game. People also say Ghostbusters: The Video Game was supposed to be the 3rd Ghostbuster’s movie, well it would have sucked in a theater. Like most games.

Oh no uncharted and pirates… In Madagascar no less. I wonder if someone will twist this into a ‘white man shooting Africans’ sort of thing.

I really hoped it doesn’t get twisted into something like that, but after everything that’s happened in the media lately, I guess everything is possible. The Uncharted series is one my favorite series of games out there and I too play it for the story. It would be a shame to see the game tack a hit like that.

      • I don’t think it will. I think that Uncharted is far too casual for people to care. I’m just thinking of the whole Resident Evil 5 thing. But the guy that started that craze has ‘retired’ from game journalism or whatever. Its easy to attack a game from any angle. Like how GTA V is an educational game and Mario is just a murdering spree.

And yes I really like the Uncharted series. Combat is great, the enemies aren’t easy targets. They make some wild actions like jump out of cover, roll out of it. Its some nice intelligence.

My fear is that this will be the last Uncharted, at least for a while given how Drake and Sully discuss in the trailer how they’re going to go at it one last time. I know all good things must come to an end at some point, but I love the Uncharted games and I’m sure they could come up with another great treasure hunt or two!

          • It will never be the last uncharted. I think with the third one they were discussing that and how it could be Sully’s last. As long as it sells games, it’ll never be the last. Same with God of War. I’m just happy they don’t churn them out. Three per console is good enough. Then maybe they need to have a new IP with the same engine.

It could be the last with Naughty Dog though, Insomniac got bored with Ratchet and Clank and Resistance and moved on to making Sunset Overdrive and Fuse. I doubt another studio would be able to make an uncharted on the level that Naughty Dog can. It might turn out pretty good, but it wouldn’t ever be the same 🙁
