We all know that the NES controller is one of the most iconic gaming controllers out there, with it being around for over 30 years and all. Not to mention that many of the controller we use now are based off of it’s design. But, old or not, Nintendo still feels like reacquiring a trademark for it’s design.

It is still a mystery on why Nintendo has issued a new trademark. But its safe to say its due to other gaming companies such as Sony and Microsoft being able to use the NES controllers cross-shaped D-pad design since 2005, when its patent expired.

Another reason for this sudden trademark request could possibly be in relation with the mysterious Nintendo NX. Perhaps the NX controller could possibly resemble to the NES controller. Or maybe the design will be implemented in a controller accessory for Nintendo’s up and coming mobile games.

Who knows. But with Nintendo, anything is possible.
