Tomb Raider 2013 has become the bestselling title in the Tomb Raider franchise; Square Enix have announced today on their tumblr blog that the game has sold over 8.5 million copies since it was released in 2013.

Initially the first few months after the game was released Square Enix revealed that the game did not meet sale expectations. Within the first 4 weeks 3.4 million copies were sold and other titles released around the same time also missed their marks. Perhaps Square Enix raised the bar too high? Who knows.

Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”

Tomb Raider did ,despite it’s initial let down for Square Enix, sell more copies on release day and the release month than any other game in the series officially breaking it’s first milestone. Now a year after it’s original release it’s become the bestselling game in the franchise which is nothing to be disappointed with.

The last game was released for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC in 2013 and a ‘definitive edition’ later arrived for the Xbox One and Playstation 4 in 2014.

The series reboot is getting a sequel which is due to be released this year. Rise of the Tomb Raider is set after the events of the reboot and Lara will be back with her trusty bow, trying to prove she’s not insane as she seeks the truth behind myths surrounding immortality in Siberia. Crystal Dynamics are developing the game however they have gone for a different publisher; this time Microsoft Studies will be publishing the game.

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a Xbox exclusive for a period of time however Microsoft did reveal it will be released on other platforms at a later date. It will be interesting to see how this game will compare to the 2013 series reboot.
