After pretty decent E3 conference from Sony featuring some pretty huge game announcements, you may not have noticed a little feature that went fairly unnoticed on E3 eve which is Playstion 4’s very own media player. Once you’ve finished all the “finally”‘s and “it’s about time”‘s you’ll realise that this long awaited addition to the Playstation home screen has some pretty cool features.

I for one was a massive fan of the way Playstation 3 could pick up other media servers that you had on your home network and access files on those servers, it was a feature that has kept my PS3 sitting alongside my PS4 right up until now. But the new media player has that feature so my older console may finally get retired to a different room. The other function is USB connectivity. You can pile all the movies, videos, songs and pictures you want onto your USB device and plug it straight into your PS4 to play, view and listen. Songs can even be played as background music to the games you are playing. Long awaited feature, yes, but much needed.

If you’re wondering what file types the new app will be able to access, here’s a list:
