People who play support in League of Legends usually go for the burly Braum, swift Jenna or the non-meta (but totally justifiable) Fiddlesticks.
Others play as Taric. Taric is a gem wielding tank in most cases. I actually enjoy playing him when I support, because being a tank is just fun. You can run up to the enemies and just not care about what they do to you, buy a Thornmail and laugh as you watch the world burn.
