As if it couldn’t have any more hype or pressure on its shoulders, Halo 5: Guardians will change the Halo universe in “really important ways” according to the game’s developers.

This statement comes from Frank O’Connor, who was speaking to Forbes as the Halo franchise development director. O’Connor stated that after the events of Halo 5 have taken place, the story “will never be the same”.

“There are some elements of the story that are definitely there to surprise people” O’Connor further said. Parts of these surprises are supposedly being teased out in the current Halo 5 TV commercials, one of which depicts Master Chief as dead.

The story as we know it is this: for unknown reasons, Master Chief and Blue Team have gone AWOL from the UNSC at the beginning of Halo 5: Guardians, prompting Spartan Locke, along with Fireteam Osiris, to track him across the galaxy.

There’s also the matter of the titular Guardians to contend with. The Forerunner constructs that have had a presence in previous Halo games, but the back story of which has never been properly delved into. Could that all change in the Halo game that makes a clear reference to them in the title?

Halo 5: Guardians will launch worldwide on October 27th, exclusively for the Xbox One.
