Square Enix is responsible for many great franchises in the gaming industry, including Dragon Quest, Mana, and of course Final Fantasy. More recently, they have also taken over Tomb Raider and the Hitman series. The gaming community is happy to have Square Enix publishing great games, but could the company be setting their sights a little higher?

In a report from DualShockers, it is said that the publisher has filed a trademark for “Shinra Game System.” It would be quite interesting and a turn in the industry if Square Enix were actually pursuing to make their own system. What is even more interesting, however, is the name Shinra. Shinra Technologies, owned by Square Enix, is a subdivision of the company that looks to further progress cloud gaming. Fans of Final Fantasy VII will also recognize that Shinra is the company responsible for harvesting the life stream and sending the world into chaos. I think it is safe to say that is not what Square Enix has in mind.

Please remember, all of this is only speculation from one filed trademark, which happens all the time. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
