Before the company collapsed in 2013, THQ had quite a few irons in the fire, and as it turns out, one was the ambitious AAA Avengers game fans have wanted for years now. Though news of the THQ Australia title isn’t exactly new, Unseen 64 has put together an in depth look at the game, complete with story details and extensive gameplay footage.

Set to release near or alongside the original Avengers film, the game would have followed its own original story based on the Secret Invasion event from the comics, pitting the Avengers and the entirety of the Marvel universe against an invasion of shape shifting aliens known as the Skrull . And if that wasn’t enough, the event’s original writer, Brian Michael Bendis, penned the game.

In development for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and even with plans for a Wii U version, by all accounts the game was fairly far along. It featured first-person playable combat with Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America. Focusing on co-op, the game would have allowed splitscreen and online play, the different characters having support and combo abilities between each other.

Far from a problem with quality, the game, though said to be quite good, was scrapped the decline of THQ as the economics of supporting the project simply fell apart.

What do you think of the Avengers game that could have been? Let us know in the comments.
