Nintendo’s next console, code name NX, will not be next version of Wii or Wii U.

The NX will not be talked about in detail till next year, which is unfortunate and suspenseful. The new company president Tatsumi Kimishima stated, “I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U.” This information comes from an interview with TIME. Kimishima goes on to say, “It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”

He really wants people to know this console will be different from their last home consoles. This is important because people that don’t follow the gaming industry didn’t really know what the difference between the Wii and Wii U was. Many thought the Wii U was just that tablet that could be used for the Wii.

According to The Verge, “Previous reports claimed that the device would be some kind of mobile / console hybrid, with a separate mobile unit that “could could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use.” It’s also expected to be much more powerful than the Wii U in order to better compete with the Xbox and PlayStation”

Game companies are already working on title for the NX, such as the new Dragon Quest. Nintendo is also planning for its mobile debut.  According to The Verge, “The company’s first smartphone release will be a free-to-play app called Miitomo.”

Kimishima also joked, “As for the codename NX, I don’t believe that there’s any real meaning behind it, and to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where it came from,” says Kimishima, laughing when I ask. “Or perhaps Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance.”
