As the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) rapidly approaches, the Game Developers Choice awards do as well. Today the nominees for 2015 have been announced, and while most of the nominations are what you would expect, there are a couple of surprises, namely Rocket League in the running for game of the year.

Soccer played in rocket powered cars, Rocket League certainly got a lot of people talking in 2015, taking the number 4 slot in our top 10 games of 2015 list. Along with a nomination for GDC’s game of the year, it also received a nod for best design.

While most of the nominations went (deservedly) to the heavy hitters of the past year, The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid V, and Bloodborne, more than a few lesser known, smaller titles like Her Story, Undertale, and Ori and the Blind Forest received multiple nominations.
