DC’s greatest heroes are returning for a rematch in Injustice 2, set to release next year.

Fans were excited yesterday when there was a leaked image of a poster for the sequel to the original superhero brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us. Most likely in response to the leak Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have released the official announcement trailer.

Previous characters such as Batman, Superman, Aquaman and The Flash are making a comeback, but the trailer also showcases a new hero, Supergirl, who wasn’t in Gods Among Us. Other new characters have also been announced, Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd joining the roster with plenty more reveals to come.

Ed Boon, Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios, released a statement saying, “In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games, we’re always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customise and level up their favourite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.”

NetherRealm took the the PlayStation Blog to Explain the new features, and the armor shown off in the trailer. “The Gear System uses RPG-like mechanics to reward you with loot drops every time you play the game. With each loot drop, you will earn character-specific gear to outfit and power up your roster – changing not only the look of each character, but your fight strategy and your personal approach to every match.”

Continuing, the developer explains, “As you gear up your characters, you’re building a roster of DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains that reflects your choices, and your preferences, which can be vastly different than your opponents. A few play sessions in, you can expect your Aquaman to look and play different than anyone else’s Aquaman you may come across.”

Additionally, NetherRealm also announced that owners of the Injustice: God Among Us mobile game can unlock the Injustice 2 versions of Superman and Aquaman through the challenge modes.

Injustice 2 will come to Xbox One and PS4 in 2017, but there is not news on a PC version yet. Are you excited for Injustice 2? Or do you prefer the more brutal aspects of Mortal Kombat? Let us know in the comments below.
