Announced days ago, Lara Croft will make her return debut on the big screen in a reboot of the franchise. As announced by Warner Bros. and MGM on Variety news, the rebooted series will be hitting cinemas on March 16th, 2018. The new Lara Croft will be portrayed by ‘The Danish Girl’ actress Alicia Vikander who received the role back in April.

Prior to the reboot, the Lara Croft movies was produced by Paramount Studios featuring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. The movie was successful, earning $432 million USD for its 2001 and 2003 movie release. With Warner Bros. and MGM co-producing the reboot movie, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug will be spearheading this project. It was stated that Uthaug will be drawing inspiration from the latest reboot of the game franchise by Square Enix for her origin story in the movie.

MGM had received the rights to Tomb Raider by partnering with King’s GK Films who had acquired the rights from Square Enix back in 2011.

The new Tomb Raider movie is just one of the few video game movies that have been starting to have a resurgence in the last few years. With a mixed reception to the Warcraft movie and the mixed feelings on the Assassin’s Creed Movie, this generation at least will be seeing many more video game based movies to come.
