The Assassin’s Creed movie is going to be an epic, at least in terms of its length. The filmmakers have announced the film’s run-time will be a whopping 140 minutes.

Game developer Ubisoft is involved in the film production, which would lead you to think the movie is perfectly placed to include enough action and interesting characters to warrant such a length, with plenty of assassin-style intrigue in store. At this duration though, it may struggle to tempt new fans to dip their toe into the long running game franchise.

That being said, the films scriptwriters will have plenty of character background and plot building to get through. If they wish this film to get enough public attention, critical acclaim, and of course ticket revenue, to warrant further sequels, then they best hope that there is enough in the two hours and twenty minutes for those new to the Assassin’s Creed universe to enjoy, rather than endure.

“Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain,” the films description reads. “Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.”

Assassin’s Creed releases December 21st and stars Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men Days of Future Past) alongside Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception). Over the summer we learned familiar characters from the games will also be making an appearance in the film.
