Deus Ex: Mankind Divided publisher Sqaure Enix announced back in August the release date of February 23, 2016. Along with the date was a, safe to say, controversial pre-order system.

The augmented pre-order will unlock up to 5 new tiers depending on how many people pre-ordered the game. These reward ranged from DLC of skins, music, with the 5th tier dispatching the game 4 days earlier then release.

Augmented pre-order was met with mostly hostile reactions, causing Square Enix to cancel it only a few days after the option had been up for over a month.

Square Enix explained that when the idea was first conceived it was to stop region separation in their pre-orders. Offering different exclusives to different regions caused frustrating amongst the gamers, but augmenting and adding ‘more incentives’ turned out to be an even worse idea.

“After much thought and reflection, we decided to close down the program and make all of the incentive content available to anyone who preorders Deus Ex: Mankind Divided or purchases a Day 1 edition of the game. […] Additionally, the release date will no longer be changed in accordance with preorder numbers, and everyone will gain access to the game on February 23, 2016.”
