Uncharted 4 director: there’ll be “arguments about the ending”

Ever since it was revealed the subtitle of Uncharted 4 would be 'A Thief’s End,' fans have been debating and betting on just how final the ending might be. Add in the extra fuel of Naughty Dog stating Uncharted 4 will be their last outing with Nathan Drake, and you have a roaring bonfire of speculation on your hands. With the game officially complete, Game Director Neil Druckmann opened up about his feelings on the matter.Speaking to IGN, Druckmann explains, “I think people will discuss the ending. If focus tests are anything to go by, there will be some arguments about the ending… I'm excited. Indifference would be the worst thing. I would rather have people hate it than be indifferent to it. We'll see how they react.”

Ever since it was revealed the subtitle of Uncharted 4 would be ‘A Thief’s End,’ fans have been debating and betting on just how final the ending might be. Add in the extra fuel of Naughty Dog stating Uncharted 4 will be their last outing with Nathan Drake, and you have a roaring bonfire of speculation on your hands. With the game officially complete, Game Director Neil Druckmann opened up about his feelings on the matter.

Speaking to IGN, Druckmann explains, “I think people will discuss the ending. If focus tests are anything to go by, there will be some arguments about the ending… I’m excited. Indifference would be the worst thing. I would rather have people hate it than be indifferent to it. We’ll see how they react.”

As for specifics however, he’s quick to laugh off the question. “Do you really want me to tell you? You don’t really want me to tell you,” he says, when asked if Nate might not survive his final adventure.

When it comes to deciding the lovable protagonist’s fate, Druckmann makes it clear the studio only did what they felt was best and most honest, not necessarily what will make the most people happy. “What I found is you kind of have to ignore other people. Any time you try to please something outside yourself, it can easily come off as false.

“Whenever we make something that’s honest to us that is the game we truly want to play, you know whether you succeed or not. You pick up the controller and you’re playing it and you’re like, ‘Am I feeling anything from these characters? Am I having fun? Am I intrigued? Am I bored? Do I even care about this character?’ And if not, OK, I need to fix that for myself. I found that the more we’ve done that, the more successful we’ve been, and that’s the only correlation I can come up with.”

Earlier today Naughty Dog released a huge preview for Uncharted 4, highlighting the openness of its Madagascar location. Nate’s fate will finally be revealed when the game releases May 10, exclusively for PS4. Are you excited for an ending that might be a bit divisive? Let us know in the comments.
