Square Enix working on "experimental" new IP

Speaking as part of a financial results briefing for the fiscal year ended March 31, company president Yosuke Matsuda highlighted key IP policies Square Enix will adhere to going forward. Matsuda has said that, in addition to "strengthening and rebooting" existing IPs, Square Enix will be developing a number of new, more "experimental" IPs, although he wouldn't go into much detail about what the company is currently working on, saying:"I cannot disclose much at this moment, but we are working on various initiatives, including some experimental projects."

Speaking as part of a financial results briefing for the fiscal year ended March 31, company president Yosuke Matsuda highlighted key IP policies Square Enix will adhere to going forward. Matsuda has said that, in addition to “strengthening and rebooting” existing IPs, Square Enix will be developing a number of new, more “experimental” IPs, although he wouldn’t go into much detail about what the company is currently working on, saying:

“I cannot disclose much at this moment, but we are working on various initiatives, including some experimental projects.”

He also said that the company is “planning to announce several titles” at its “private conference at the next E3.” Since the report is translated from Japanese to English, the wording creates opportunity for misinterpretation, but Matsuda suggests new games will be shown behind-closed-doors at E3 2015. However, he may be referring to the dedicated Square Enix conference at the upcoming E3 2015 event, which they announced in late April, although they eventually moved the time of the event so that it wouldn’t coincide with Nintendo’s conference.

During the briefing, Matsuda also mentioned that “both PS4 and Xbox One are continuing to grow,” although he seems to be preferring the PlayStation 4, due to the fact that the “PS4 seems to be doing especially well, mainly in the West.” He also announced that, while there isn’t exactly anything in the pipelines at Square Enix, the company is interested in current, and future Virtual Reality software. Matsuda said that Square Enix is “monitoring [these trends] with great interest, and considering various initiatives,” suggesting that, at some point in time, we may indeed see some Virtual Reality games from the company, although this would be years away.
