Minecraft performs well as Xbox sales rise

Microsoft has reported their earnings for the past quarter, which ended on June 30. According to the report, Xbox sales were strong.Microsoft sold a combined 1.4 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles during the last quarter. This is up from 1.1 million during the same quarter last year. Overall Xbox platform revenue rose 10% to $86 million. While this was led by more consoles sold, it was partially offset by lower Xbox One price points compared to last year.

Microsoft sold a combined 12.1 million Xbox consoles during the fiscal year, up from 11.7 million last year. Along with increased console sales, Xbox Live revenue rose by $205 million. This was thanks in part to more Xbox Live users, and increased revenue per user.

Minecraft also continued to post strong numbers. Revenue from the sandbox franchise helped total Microsoft first-party revenue for the quarter increase $63 million, or 62% compared to last year.

While Microsoft’s Xbox division posted positive numbers, the company did not overall. For the last quarter, Microsoft posted revenue of $22.2 billion. This is down from $23.4 billion during the same period last year. Microsoft posted an overall loss of $2.1 billion, compared to an income of $6.5 billion last year. The operating loss includes an $8.4 billion impairment charge related to the recent Nokia restructuring.
