Addressing concerns that the free PS Plus version of DriveClub was officially off the table, a Sony spokesperson, speaking with Eurogamer, clarified that the free edition of the PS4 exclusive racer is very much still in the works.

Though offering no specifics, the spokesperson said, “We are continually working on improving the server capacity to enable us to launch the PS Plus Edition as quickly as possible.” Beyond that however, Sony does “not have an update regarding the timing for the launch.”

The confusion began recently around a Metro interview with the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Jim Ryan, where, when asked if he could guarantee the PS Plus version of DriveClub would ever happen, he responded, “I can’t say anything at this stage.” Ryan’s evasion struck most of the industry as pretty clear evidence of bad news.

Since the game’s launch, gamers have been waiting for the PS Plus limited free version of Evolution Studio’s latest. Promised as far back as when DriveClub was still meant as a launch title for the PS4, the free version was pushed back, along with the full game, almost a full year, only to be postponed once more when the game released in October with crippling server issues. By all accounts, the online problems of the game are mostly resolved, and it seems Sony is working to make it even better.

Just this past month saw the release of yet another patch to the game, bringing with it a rather hefty amount of free content.
