The first expansion for the MMORPG Guild Wars 2, Heart of Thorns, will be released on October 23rd.  The expansion will be set in the Heart of Maguuma, a jungle area with three biomes.

The expansion will add more than just a new area.  It also adds the Mastery system, an endgame progression system based around PVP.  Players can earn mastery points by doing a number of things, including exploring the map, completing missions and doing other activities.  These points can then be used to buy new abilities on their PVP accounts.

We also will have access to Specializations, which will add in new skills and weapons for existing classes.  On top of this we can expect a new Revenant profession, World vs. World Borderland map, and the competitive PvP Stronghold mode, in which players fight for the dominance of the strongholds by raiding supplies, recruiting troops and of course attacking enemy strongholds.

Finally Heart of Thorns will add Guild Halls, a social space for guilds to meet, socialize and plan missions.

Guild Wars 2 was released in 2012 and has sold over 5 million copies to date.
