Neverwinter developer Arc has finally pulled the curtain from the next expansion coming to their free-to-play Dungeons and Dragons based MMO, and it’s Neverwinter: The Maze Engine.

The game’s ninth expansion, it will pick up right where the game’s eighth expansion left off. “Neverwinter: The Maze Engine continues the story of demons escaping from the Abyss that was started in Neverwinter: Underdark,” the developer explains. “The demon lord Baphomet seeks the Maze Engine, a powerful artifact that could mean the end for all of Neverwinter’s citizens…

Band together with familiar faces such as Drizzt Do’Urden, Regis, Bruenor Battlehammer and Minsc in order to take down Baphomet – and mayhap other demonic forces that lurk within.”

Posting on the game’s website, Lead Designer Scott Shicoff detailed some of the major changes coming in the expansion. First off, dungeons are coming back. “It’s been one of the things everyone (including those on the dev team) has been asking for since they went away. With Neverwinter: The Maze Engine, we are bringing back four of the favorites. Each of these dungeons has had both a visual and design pass to bring them up to the quality people expect.”

He went on to also explain there would be a new single-player campaign added, and fans can look forward to an overhaul of the mount system. “The short version: all of the mounts you already have will automatically be made better, and there are a lot of new mounts/mount features being created.”

While overall the announcement was short on details, expect to hear more in the run up to the expansions launch sometime this spring on the PC. The Xbox One version will then follow at a later date. What do you think of Neverwinter: The Maze Engine? Let us know in the comments.
