The more powerful precursor to the beloved Horadric Cube of Diablo 2, Kanai’s Cube will be making its way into Diablo 3 with the soon to be released patch 2.3.0, bringing a wealth of changes and customization options to the game. In a recent post, Blizzard explained the “immeasurable transmutation power,” of the cube, and how it basically does “all the things” you could ever want.

The Kanai’s Cube will have two primary uses. First will be the extraction of legendary powers from any level gear, allowing you to equip those individual powers, from other pieces, to your already equipped weapons, armor, and jewelry. And second, is the ability to completely re-roll a legendary piece. The option already exists in the game to enchant a piece of gear, altering a single statistic, but Kanai’s Cube will allow a complete reset of a legendary item’s stats.

Though not speaking much further on it, Blizzard promised there was even more the cube can do, saying, “There are also several other quality of life functions Kanai’s Cube can perform, such as removing the level requirement from an item, converting gems and crafting materials from one type to another, and converting a set item to a different piece of that set.”

While the cube is named after the last barbarian guardian of the cube, Kanai, that guardian was named in tribute of a Blizzard artist, Kevin Kanai Griffith, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and passed away last October.

Kanai’s Cube is arriving as part of Diablo 3’s hefty 2.3.0 patch that is also adding a new area, the Ruins of Sescheron, where the player will be sent on a quest to find the cube. Currently is the Public Test Realm, look for more news on the patch’s release date soon.
