The Psychonauts 2’s funding campaign is off to a great start.

Psychonauts 2’s funding campaign has brought in over $1 million since launching last night. Double Fine is funding the project through Fig, a new crowdfunding platform that allows the public to invest in game projects and earn money on the back end, rather than simply giving money in return for pre-defined rewards. Of the $1 million that the studio has received so far, around 40% of it has come from investors, with the rest coming from traditional pledges.

Double Fine is seeking $3.3 million to make Psychonauts, and will only get the money from Fig if the goal is reached. The campaign runs until January 7th, which leaves plenty of time for the remaining $2.3 million to be raised.

The $3.3 million is less than what is needed (estimates suggest the project would need around $10 million to be completed), but Double Fine is “putting up a significant portion of the development funds” itself, and an unknown “external partner” is helping out as well.

Psychonauts 2 is expected to release sometime in 2018. The game will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
