In an interview from Japanese publication Nikkei, it was reported that new Nintendo president, Tatsumi Kimishima, had said that the Wii U would not be a success. Kimishima had said that the console’s similarities to the Wii would become problematic.

The Wii U failed to sell large quantities following its release. The similarities between the Wii and Wii U factored into market confusion and was one of the main reasons the console was not able to gain much consumer interest.

Before he had passed, Satoru Iwata, the former president of Nintendo, had been focused on marketing the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U’s unique lineup. Over time, interest accumulated for the two platforms.

Kimishima had stated that he intended on staying the course that Iwata had set out for Nintendo. Kimishima has been elected as the president of Nintendo for one year and will continue to focus on efforts to get Nintendo into the mobile market. After his one-year period, Kimishima is not sure what will happen.

Previously, Kimishima acted as the chief financial officer of the Pokémon Company and acted as the director of Nintendo of America. Nintendo’s next console, codenamed the NX is rumored to be released in 2016.
