It’s rough. When it Metroid Prime: Federation Force was announced at E3 last year, it was met with scathing criticisms from onlookers for not being the Metroid game people demanded. In the latest Nintendo Direct, the team talked about why this game exists. Not only that, but a showcase of the game is shown with the trailer above.

Metroid Prime series producer Kensuke Tanabe came to the defense of the game during the Direct, he stated that game was a necessity in order to paint a better story between the Galactic Federation and Space Pirates, something he had wanted to be done for so long.

Federation Force is a 3DS shooter with 3 player co-op. The team will progress through various rooms and go through enemies and puzzles in order to take down the Space Pirates.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force is planned for release sometime in Spring 2016 on the Nintendo 3DS.

The comparison Nintendo used after E3 was that people didn’t like Wind Waker either but that was just the style. WW played like a Zelda game and was a Zelda game. This is nothing like a Metroid game. Mario may well appear in Karts, Olympics etc but they don’t dare call that Super Mario World/Galaxy because they aren’t world-class platformers. This isn’t Metroid Prime! Also, if the game actually looked like it had a “wow factor” about it then people may also give it a fair shake but it everything about it looks “meh” from the art style to the gameplay to the team mechanics. If the producer wanted to get more into the back-story of Federation vs Space Pirates then he should just have written a blog and saved us the time.

The comparison to Wind Waker falls on deaf ears for me; I hate Wind Waker, and a big part of it is the style. I gave Wind Waker a shot, but most of the characters annoyed me, and I eventually quit after playing through the stupid water temple. I hated Wind Waker because of it’s art style, and afterward because of the characters and mechanics. Federation Force was never on my radar because I hate the 3DS so much, but if I liked the 3DS this game would never be part of my library because it looks so stupid.
