As was already announced, the first piece of Batman Arkham Knight DLC will be landing later this month. Titled ‘Batgirl: A Matter of Family’ it will allow players the first opportunity to play as Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, before she became the Oracle that we all know and love.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have the first screenshot from the DLC, seen below, and the first details about what players will be doing once they step into Batgirl’s shoes. ‘A Matter of Family’ is set to take place before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum, and will follow Batgirl as she, with the help of Robin, fights her way through Seagate Amusement Park, a nautical-themed, deathtrap-riddled theme park built on top of an old oil refinery, all to save her kidnapped father, Commissioner Gordon, from the Joker.

Justin Vasquez, senior design producer at WB Montreal, explained, “We wanted to recreate the feeling of being trapped in a bizarre and unique open environment playing a game of cat and mouse with the Joker… [It’s] a love letter to the original game that started this incredible franchise.”

As for what makes Batgirl different from the series’ usual dark, brooding protagonist, Vasquez went on to say, “Hacking is really what separates her from the other characters. It’s a gameplay mechanic with which the player can create situations for Batgirl to really shine… Our intention was that Batgirl should be less powerful than Batman, but that Batgirl plus hacking could give her opportunities do things that not even Batman can pull off.”

As an added bonus, the DLC will also be the first time Harley Quinn will appear in the series in her original red and black jester suit from the animated series.

‘Batgirl: A Matter of Family’ will release as part of the game’s season pass on July 14th, or as a single purchase for $6.99 on July 21st. Still haven’t jumped into the full game? Check out our review.
