With all the buzz from last year about Shenmue 3, Sega is currently investigating how to make HD remasters of Shenmue 1 and 2 a reality, according to Sega Europe community manager, Dan Sheridan.

“Of course we would love to release these tomorrow,” he said during the latest episode of Sega Central. “Sadly it’s not as simple as porting the games to the current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lived up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2 there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it, and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

This is all speculation currently, but it shows that the thought has crossed Sega’s mind recently. The original Shenmue released for the Dreamcast in 2000, with Shenmue 2 releasing a year later. The latest entry, Shenmue 3, is slated for a late 2017 release for the PlayStation 4 and PC.
