In response to an avalanche of criticism a representative of Payday 2 developer, Overkill Software, issued an apology on the Payday 2 steam community forum. The Payday 2 community has been up in arms since the introduction in-game microtransactions.

In short a new type of post match reward  was added to the game which required the use of in-game currency to open. The new currency was only available to purchase with real world money and the rewarded Items were tied to in-game stat boosts creating a pay-to-win mechanic in what had been a free-to-play game.

The community uproar became so intense that the volunteer community moderators for the Payday 2 steam community page went on strike in mid-November. This is the first time Overkill Software has admitted mistakes as their representative Amir listo states:

“The past few weeks have been some of the most challenging in the history of this community. Players have   been angry with us, media have written about us en masse and our volunteer moderators went on strike. For all the distress we’ve caused the past few weeks, I’d just like to take the time and say that we’re sorry. We’ve done a lot of things right in the past, but these past few weeks we screwed up.

We need to get better at many things, and we will do our best to improve as soon as possible.”
