America has had the XL version of the New 3DS for some time now. We never received the smaller version of the handheld, though that may be changing soon.

In an interview with Kotaku, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime states that while Nintendo didn’t have an announcement at E3 for a North American release, the company has “certainly taken note of all of the readers and consumers that expressed desire for the base model.”

Fils-Aime then goes into why Nintendo only released the New 3DS XL model first: “We analyzed the results in Japan and saw the lion’s share of the volume was on the XL model, and that’s with no 2DS existing in the Japanese market. And so as we thought about: ‘What’s the best line-up for us?’ We thought the new XL and 2DS would be our best line-up.”

Fils-Aime then gives a little bit of a tease: “Not going to make any promises but, you know, I would suggest to your readers that the stay tuned and maybe some special SKUs might show up.”
