Congratulations to Miasma eSports for winning the second Gamespresso Heroes Open!

On April 23rd Miasma eSports took our second Heroes of the Storm tournament undefeated. As part of the prize, we are happy to introduce you to the team more personally.

Miasma eSports was originally founded on January 21st 2016 by Renal. With their sights set high, the team is hoping to qualify for the regionals within the next year.

Striving to be one of the best teams in the North America competitive region, Miasma recognizes it’s a difficult task and is putting in the hours. Working together and practicing, they plan to realize their goals while still continuing to use dank memeage such as “Get Stuffed”.

The name Miasma eSports came from Renal’s raiding guild, previously formed on the Ghostlands realm in World of Warcraft. His previous in-game name was Korlik/Gorrosh in WoW, and he found himself somehow loving the idea of diseased air.

Rory “Renal” Gilhooly has been playing MOBAs for four years now. With that experience under his belt, he decided to jump into competitive gaming and created Miasma eSports.

Presently, he’s still the Captain and Main Shotcaller for the group, helping them to synchronize all of their plays. Starting out as Ranged DPS, Renal has moved onto playing the role of Main Tank for the team. Preferring tanks that can actively mitigate or heal damage, his favourite Hero is currently Dehaka.

Now attending Rosalind Frankling University for his post-Bachelor’s program, Renal graduated from Marquette University in 2015 with a degree in Biological Sciences. He has plans to attend a podiatry school in the coming year.

Renal doesn’t just give back to the community by participating in games, he also is known to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Extra Life. A semi-active streamer, he asks that all considered donations be put towards the charity. So far he’s raised roughly $1000 for Extra Life.

You can find him on Twitch and Twitter.

Brett “Goldengrif” Kelly is Team Miasma’s Main Support. Although new to the team, Goldengrif isn’t a stranger to gaming.

Growing up, an introduction to Twisted Metal ignited a love of gaming. After that, Pokemon, Super Smash Bros., and Phantasy Star Online were some of his favourite games.

In house tournaments with friends(including Xalrons of Sycom) got him hooked onto competitive gaming. After awhile he joined the World of Warcraft community, raiding during Vanilla, Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King.

Like many players, Goldengrif’s first MOBA experience was during Warcraft III. The Dota community-created game started the love affair, leading his passion to only grow once League of Legends came out. Reaching the top 2,000 players in the first two seasons, Goldengrif swapped over to Heroes in open beta.

Fast forward to March 2016, and while currently enrolled in his first year of Dental School at Marquette University, Goldengrif joined Team Miasma as Main Support. His favourite is Brightwing.

Matt Imad “Swollen” Summers is currently playing Ranged DPS / Flex for Miasma eSports.

Getting into the competitive scene 2 years ago, Swollen joined Miasma about 3 months ago. His experience with Miasma eSports has been good so far, noting the teams growth over those past few months.

Excited about the team making a name for themselves, Swollen is looking forward to his future in the Heroes community; along with Miasma eSports.

You can find him on Twitter.

Muamone Jonathon “AxxMaxxTa” Yang was friends with Renal before the team was formed.

Currently attending Marquette University for a Computer Engineering degree, AxxMaxxTa is hoping to work for Blizzard Entertainment if his pro-gaming career doesn’t kick off.

Playing games for years, AxxMaxxTa started with the original Starcraft. A 2010 Diamond league player in Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty, he is no stranger to playing at a higher skill level.

AxxMaxxTa started playing MOBAs with DotA in Warcraft III, moving on to League of Legends once it was released. There he played casually, reaching at least Gold for all of the rewards that came along with the title.

He moved to Dota 2 once the game released, hitting 4K MMR on his main Steam account. After that however, he started to play Heroes of the Storm with his close friend Renal. In a twist of events, AxxMaxxTa managed to hit Rank 1 before Renal. He even queued up and managed to get games against him, regularly beating Renal in matches.

Together, they found others who wanted to play the game competitively. And, after many roster changes, they have found the team of AxxMaxxTa, Renal, SleepyBear, Swollen, Goldengrif, and their current coach Shortsteve. Blending together well, they manage to keep the hype up within their team.

AxxMaxxTa streams for Extra Life every once in awhile on his Twitch.

Logan “SleepyBear” Fox is the Ranged/Melee Assassin for Miasma eSports. Only recently joining Miasma, Sleepybear is already having a great time with the team.

Currently in school to become a Lawyer, he’s also working on going pro in Heroes of the Storm.

SleepyBear’s gaming history certainly isn’t as intense as the others, sticking mostly with titles like League of Legends, Blade and Soul, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm. Although his love of gaming is newer, don’t let his in-game name fool you – SleepyBear is wide awake for their competitive matches.

You can find him streaming on Twitch.

Miasma eSports would like to extend Honorable Mentions to both Anardrius and Wraith for subbing in the Gamespresso Heroes Open #2.
