In the upcoming Mafia 3, players will be able to ally themselves with a few of the underbosses of the criminal underworld. According to lead writer Bill Harms, neglecting these relationships can have severe consequences.

According to Harms, there are three underbosses that protagonist Lincoln Clay will be able to befriend throughout the game: Cassandra, the leader of the Haitian gang; Thomas Burke, a member of the Irish mob; and Vito Scaletta, the protagonist from Mafia 2.

“As you play through the game, you can assign out one of the nine districts to one of the underbosses,” Harms explains in an interview. “One of the things we’re really trying to do is have these rich, deep characters in terms of the underbosses.”

Harms also states that players may be conflicted. They may like one character over the other, but another character may offer the player a bonus for assigning them a district. Ignoring a character and not giving them any districts will have consequences.

“Depending on how the player assigns those districts, it can turn one of those underbosses… against you,” Harms states. “So, in the case that you’re talking about, Cassandra and Vito have received all the districts up to that point, and Burke was like, ‘I’m done.’ And basically at that point, they revolt against Lincoln and he has to deal with it.”

Mafia 3 will release on October 7th. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
