Ni No Kuni, Studio Ghibli’s first foray into the gaming industry, was well received for story, visuals, and music. At PlayStation Experience 2016, we got the second trailer for Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom, “See the progress of Evan’s quest to rebuild his kingdom as explores the land and meets new friends and foes.”

Ni No Kuni 2 and its trailer follows King Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, Roland, and friends as they work together to take down his usurper and get his old life back as king of Ding Dong Dell. It has what looks like a real-time combat system this time around.

It seems that Studio Ghibli has minimal involvement with the game, unlike the first game, with the work lying on Level-5’s competent shoulders. The overworld is in a charming chibi style, and the trailer shows some wonderful looking cutscenes, character interactions, and combat. It looks like the childhood wonderment, charm, and beauty are staying in the game despite the lack of Ghibli.

Revenant Kingdom was originally announced in 2015, but the announcement at PlayStation Experience keeps the excitement alive and let us know it’s happening sometime within the next year, despite it being 4 years since the last game.

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is set to release 2017 for the PlayStation 4.
